Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Popularity

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that has gained immense popularity in recent years. It is a combat sport that utilizes grappling and ground fighting techniques to overpower an opponent. The history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu dates back to the early 20th century when it was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil. In this article, we will explore the origins and evolution of both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Barra.

BJJ: How it all began

The story of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu begins with Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka who traveled the world in search of new opponents to challenge. In 1914, he arrived in Brazil and began teaching judo to Carlos Gracie, a young man from a wealthy family. Carlos immediately got hooked on the sport and began training with Maeda regularly.
As Carlos continued his studies under Maeda, he developed an interest in the ground fighting aspect of the sport. He saw potential in using these techniques to overcome larger opponents and began experimenting with new techniques.
Over time, Carlos refined these techniques into what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Carlos, along with his brothers Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George, and Hélio, went on to establish the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Rio de Janeiro in 1925. They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative techniques and willingness to take on any challenger. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began to spread throughout Brazil, and the Gracies became a household name.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at UFC

In the 1980s and 1990s, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gained international recognition thanks to the success of Royce Gracie in the early UFC events. Royce, who weighed only 170 pounds, was able to defeat much larger opponents using his BJJ skills. This put Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on the map and sparked a worldwide interest in the sport.

Gracie Barra’s history

Gracie Barra was founded by Carlos Gracie Jr. in 1986. Carlos Jr. is the son of Carlos Gracie, one of the founders of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Carlos Jr. grew up learning the sport from his father, uncle Helio Gracie and also his older brother Rolls Gracie, who were all influential figures in the development of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In the early days, Gracie Barra was a single academy in Barra da Tijuca neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. However, it quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality instruction and welcoming atmosphere. As more and more students began to train at Gracie Barra, the academy began to expand.
