Welcome, Amanda! We’re excited to learn more about you, your journey, and your experiences in martial arts, particularly your involvement in jiu jitsu for women classes.

Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, my name is Amanda, and I’m 29 years old. I hold a degree in Chemical Production Engineering and am originally from São Paulo, Brazil. Currently, I live in Utah, where I serve as the manager of Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in West Jordan. My passion for martial arts stems from its ability to foster discipline, respect, and community. Over the past two years, I have dedicated myself to creating a supportive environment for our members while also focusing on my personal and professional growth.

Family is incredibly important to me. I’m married to Tilden Swallow, a project engineer who also trains, which inspired me to begin my jiu-jitsu journey. I’m excited to share my experiences and journey with you.

How different is São Paulo from Utah?

In my opinion, São Paulo is a bustling city that never sleeps, filled with constant activity, heavy traffic, and a fast-paced lifestyle. The energy is vibrant, but life moves quickly, and it’s easy to feel swept up in the chaos. In contrast, Utah offers a completely different experience—it’s calm, peaceful, and much safer. I’ve fallen in love with Utah for its serene environment, where the pace of life is slower, and people are incredibly polite and welcoming. It’s a place perfect for creating a family, providing a strong sense of community and tranquility that is hard to find in a big city like São Paulo.

What do you do at Gracie Barra Salt Lake City?

I am currently the manager of the West Jordan unit, but until recently, I served as the Program Director at Gracie Barra SLC. In that role, I was responsible for all aspects of sales, post-sales support, student assistance, the 4:30 PM class sessions, and the overall organization of the academy. Gracie Barra SLC holds a special place in my heart as my home school.

What did you use to work with in Brazil?

In Brazil, I worked as a Chemical Production Engineer for seven years in the industry. My role involved programming production machines and ensuring quality control. I also served as an ISO 9001:2015 auditor, which taught me the importance of adhering to standards and continuous improvement. Additionally, I was involved with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) initiatives, focusing on sustainable practices in production. This experience has equipped me with a solid foundation in engineering and project management. This background has helped me develop strong problem-solving skills and a keen attention to detail, which I apply in my current role at Gracie Barra.

Wow, that was quite a professional change! Could you tell us how was this change?

The transition from being a Chemical Production Engineer to working in the martial arts industry was indeed a significant change for me. While my engineering background provided me with a strong foundation in discipline, organization, and problem-solving, moving into the martial arts sector allowed me to combine my passion for martial arts with my professional skills.

It was challenging at first, especially since I wasn’t fluent in English. However, I embraced the opportunity to grow and learn in a new environment. I will always be grateful to the Gracie Barra SLC team for giving me this chance, as they supported me every step of the way. Their encouragement helped me build my confidence and skills, and I’ve grown tremendously in both my professional and personal life. Overall, this change has been incredibly rewarding, as it has allowed me to grow in ways I never anticipated and pursue a career that aligns with my passions.

When and how did you start at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

I began my journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in September 2022, thanks to my husband, who introduced me to the sport. Initially, I had some misconceptions about it, especially since I’m Brazilian and had only practiced Muay Thai before without any prior Jiu-Jitsu training in Brazil. I was hesitant because I imagined the physical contact would be overwhelming, and I tried to avoid starting training, but my husband consistently encouraged me.

One Saturday morning, I decided to visit the SLC unit, where Professor Andrea was teaching the jiu jitsu for women classes. I remember that first class vividly; it completely shifted my perspective. I am incredibly grateful to Professor Andrea for guiding me in that initial session and igniting my passion for Jiu-Jitsu. After that jiu jitsu for women class, I enrolled in the very same day, marking the beginning of my Jiu-Jitsu journey. In December, I was presented with an opportunity to work with Gracie Barra, which I happily accepted. Today, Jiu-Jitsu is an integral part of both my personal and professional life. I have gained tremendous confidence and feel great. I plan to introduce my future children to Jiu-Jitsu from an early age.

You recently got your blue belt, how was this journey?

Receiving my blue belt was a significant milestone in my Jiu-Jitsu journey, filled with growth, challenges, and gratitude. When I first started training, I had no idea how much I would learn about myself and the sport. The support from my professors, husband, and fellow students at Gracie Barra was invaluable. Their encouragement and guidance helped me overcome obstacles and develop my skills.

As I progressed, I gained not only technical knowledge but also a deeper understanding of the principles of Jiu-Jitsu. Earning my blue belt was not just about demonstrating my skills; it was also about recognizing the hard work and dedication I put into my training. This journey has strengthened my confidence. I’m excited to continue learning and growing in my Jiu-Jitsu practice, and I look forward to working hard for my next belt.

Can you say that Jiu Jitsu changed your life for the better? Tell us about that.

Yes, Jiu-Jitsu has changed my life for the better. When I first started, I was unsure and had some misconceptions about the sport. However, once I began training, I discovered a passion that transformed me. Jiu-Jitsu has helped me build confidence, teaching me to face challenges and not give up, which has positively impacted other areas of my life. The community at Gracie Barra has been amazing. I’ve made great friends and found support from my professors and training partners. This sense of belonging has made my experience even more rewarding, and I will always be grateful to my professors and my husband for that.

Training in Jiu-Jitsu is now part of my life. It helps me relieve stress and stay fit. I’m excited to share this journey with others, especially the girls, and encourage them to try jiu jitsu for women classes for themselves.

What can you say for women that haven’t started jiu jitsu for women classes?

For women who haven’t started Jiu-Jitsu yet, I encourage you to take that first step! I had my own reservations before starting. Being Brazilian and having only practiced Muay Thai, I initially thought the contact would be overwhelming, and I hesitated to join a Jiu-Jitsu class because of my misconceptions.

However, after my husband encouraged me, I decided to attend a women’s class taught by Professor Andrea at the SLC unit. I remember feeling nervous but also excited. That first class completely changed my perspective; I realized that the environment was supportive, and everyone was there to learn together. Professor Andrea’s guidance ignited my passion for Jiu-Jitsu, and I was grateful for her encouragement. If you’re on the fence, remember that everyone starts as a beginner, and the community is welcoming. Training can empower you and boost your confidence. Don’t let preconceived notions hold you back, give it a try, and you might find a new passion and a wonderful network of supportive friends.

Who is Amanda outside Gracie Barra Salt Lake City?

I love snowboarding! For those who live in Utah, you know how great it is to have snow for such a long period, so we have to take advantage of it. My husband started teaching me last year, and I quickly fell in love with it.

I also enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, and discovering new restaurants and different cuisines.
